OPPORTUNITIES: Movie Moves Youth Training

The Educational Center Krusevac, a non profit organization promoting civil society trough life long non formal education, is organizing the training course “Movie Moves Youth”.

The training course will be held in Serbia from the 5th to the 13th of October 2014, gathering 30 participants from 10 countries. The overall aim of the training is to develop competences of youth workers/leaders in using video as a tool for working with peace building issues.

NEWS / EVENTS: Non-formal education week (ROMANIA)

Every year in Romania, the Ministry of Education dedicates one week in April to non-formal and extracurricular educational activities. All institutions, teachers and pupils are encouraged to participate in a range of diverse cultural actions.

The Safer Internet Centre (SIC) in Romania, and the country-wide network of active youth panellists, will take this as an opportunity to teach children and teachers about online safety issues. This is why, this year, in all 13 cities with active youth panels, informative sessions will be held in schools between 7-11 April. Most activities will use non-formal techniques in order to stimulate children and teachers’ participation in creating a safer and better online environment, both for them and their community. Besides activities in schools, some of the youth panellists have decided to organise flash mobs, followed by informative sessions in visible public places in their city.

OPPORTUNITIES: East Course 2014, a three-week seminar designed for young journalists from Central and Eastern Europe

Journalists from Central and Eastern Europe fluent in German can participate in this opportunity.

The Institute to Promote Journalistic Talent (IFP) will host East Course 2014, a three-week seminar designed for journalists from Central and Eastern Europe. The seminar will be held July 13 - August 1 in Munich, Germany.

Journalists ages 19 to 32 who are working in print, radio or TV media are eligible to attend. The event will address issues from information-gathering and reporting styles to press photography.The seminar will be conducted in German.

The organizers will cover the tuition fee, costs of meals and accommodation for participants. Transportation expenses may be partially covered.

The deadline is March 1.

NEWS: PRIX JEUNESSE training in Macedonia

The Macedonian story

In December 2009, Barbara Kolucki came to us and said: “You are making such good children educational programmes in Macedonia; you have to visit PRIX JEUNESSE – it is the most inspirational place in the world for people doing this kind of media!”

Six months later, we were on a plane to Munich wondering what awaited us. It was beyond our expectations – 6 days of watching programmes, no sleep (because we wanted to socialize with everyone), endless discussions, laughs and tears. These were our production’s most inspirational days outside the office and the television studios.

Since 2010, we’ve become closer to the world’s biggest children’s media research center and had the honor of meeting the PRIX team. We produced videos for the Guessing Games and organized a PRIX JEUNESSE International Youth Jury in 2012.

Prix Jeunesse - 2013

OXO’s production, the “5+” children show, is celebrating its 6th season, and “Who is Raised by Whom” – the show for parents – is celebrating one year of existence. Both were supported with fresh ideas and trends adopted in Munich.

Next, it was the Suitcase time!

With the support of Goethe institute Skopje, OXO brought the PRIX JEUNESSE Suitcase to Macedonia. Jens Ripke from ZDF/Germany guided us through the two-day workshop, “Watch, Learn and Grow with Children’s TV”.

We had faith in everything except in the number of participants. Macedonia suffers from a lack of children’s shows and TV products, thus, there are few experts working in the field. But, look what happened! 30 people visited the event: producers, actors, hosts, teachers, directors, psychologists, musicologists, and more.

OPPORTUNITIES: Fellowship brings journalists to Germany [Eastern Europe]

Journalists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Poland, Russia, Ukraine and other Commonwealth of Independent States countries can apply for this fellowship.

Internationale Journalisten-Programme (IJP) offers the Marion Gräfin Dönhoff Fellowship for young journalists. The aim of the program is to give young journalists an idea of the politics, economy, culture and social life of Germany, and give them an opportunity to gain work experience in foreign newsrooms.

Staff or freelance journalists ages 23 to 35 can participate in the program. Applicants must have excellent knowledge of the German language.

Fellows will intern in German newsrooms and work as foreign correspondents covering events in Germany for their countries’ media.

Participants will receive stipends of EUR€3,900 (about US$5,300) each, which will cover travel expenses, health insurance and accommodations.

The deadline is April 15.

EVENTS / FESTIVALS: VAFI - 4th International Children and Youth Animation Film Festival Varaždin (CROATIA)

VAFI is a film festival for animated films made by children and youth up to 18 years. From this year there is a section called VAFI SENIOR which is for animated film FOR children.

Submissions on VAFI 4 are now opened! You can submit films made by children and youth under 18 years, made in last two years (if they haven't been submitted on VAFI before).

VAFI will be held from 25 - 28 April 2013 and from now on it will always be on the last weekend of April.

Partner of VAFI 4 is MTV Croatia and it'll go under slogan "Musical VAFI".

Submission deadline for films is 25 January 2013 and films must arrive until 1 February 2013 on Festival address:

WORKSHOPS: OneMinutesJr workshop in Ust-Kamenogorsk - Day 5

UST-KAMENOGORSK, Kazakhstan, 7 September 2012 - The last day of the video workshop in East Kazakhstan has arrived and we are working with the 16 teenagers on the finalization of their OneMinutesJr films.

It always seems like things are done when you have filmed the material and edited it, but then you have to do all the "little things" like titles, subtitles, video and audio transitions and so on. Multiply this by 16 and you know how long the to-do list is - deadline 2 PM today...

ARTICLES: Empowering Roma youth in Albania

Tirana, Albania, 13 August 2012: In Albania – the country with the highest percentage of youth in Southeast Europe – Roma youth face heavy discrimination. Their exclusion from sports competitions, school events, vocational training and community life often has a negative impact on their self-confidence.

As they overcame the cultural barriers in their own Roma and Egyptian communities, four Albanians from Tirana, Elbasan, Fier and Durrës enlisted as UN Volunteers to share their experience directly with youth from nearly 2,000 Roma and Egyptian families, thus helping them exercise their rights to civil registration, child protection, health, education, vocational training and employment.

NEWS / AWARDS: UNICEF gives special award at Odessa International Film Festival

ODESSA, Ukraine, 16/17 July 2012 – In Ukraine UNICEF gave a Special Award to film “Backstreet Champions” by Akhtem Seytablaev that tells about children and people living on the streets. This movie has been taken part in the competition of Odessa International Film Festival for the best film. It is based on a real story showing how football can help to change for better life of people in difficult life circumstances and vulnerable children.

Yukie Mokuo, UNICEF Representative in Ukraine, presented our prize during the press-conference to the production team of film “Backstreet Champions” and thanked for drawing public’s attention to important social issues through visual art. This award was nominated for the first time in the 15th year history of UNICEF presence in Ukraine.

NEWS / IT / GAMES: PC game gives boost to campaign against prejudice: Adventure “Searching for the Treasure of Bosnia and Herzegovina"

SARAJEVO, BiH, 30 April 2012 - The first Bosnian adventure PC game "Searching for the treasure of Bosnia and Herzegovina" promotes the cultural and historical heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), but also helps young people to understand diversities and their peers with different ethnic and cultural background. The game is one of the products of the campaign led by UNICEF within the joint "MDGF Culture for Development" programme implemented in partnership with UNDP and UNESCO.

"Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country of diversities that have always intertwined here. It is the country of many cultures and vast historical heritage. On the other hand, in war and post-war periods diversities turned into divisions and historical heritage sometimes turned into burden. Putting our heritage to service of development and recognizing its importance for social and economic progress has been a great challenge. This game is one of our joint responses to this challenge," said Nineta Popović, Communication for Development Officer in UNICEF BiH.

OPPORTUNITIES: United Nations Internet Governance Forum, Baku, Azerbaijan, November 2012

The United Nations Internet Governance Forum is hosting their annual conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 6-9, 2012.

The series of plenary sessions and workshops will focus on Internet safety, use of social media for social change, digital citizenship, etc. The UNIGF is looking for youth ages 18-22 to join the conversations, which will include social media practitioners and digital experts from around the globe, government representatives, reps from the world's largest Internet companies, digital activists, and others.

ONEMINUTESJR / WORKSHOPS: Armenian teenagers share their experiences with juvenile justice in one-minute videos

YEREVAN, Armenia, 9 April 2012 - Sixteen teenagers from different cities in Armenia have come together in the capital Yerevan this week for a five-day video workshop as part of the OneMinutesJr initiative. Their aim is to write, film and produce movies that tell about the experiences they have made when coming in conflict with the law.

The young people are from Gyumri, Alaverdi, Kapan, Ijevan, Vanadzor, Chambarak and Yerevan. Most of them have been arrested by the police in their towns and cities at least once for petty crimes, robbery, stabbing other teenagers with knives or in one case also for alleged rape. Since they are all still minors and their crimes were either not severe enough or could not be proven, they were not sentenced to serve time in prison. Instead, they were all handed over to community centers by the police to receive psychological help and/or do community work.

Instead, almost all media consumption is built exclusively around the Internet – with legal and illegal downloading, advanced systems of recommendations, ratings, discussions and endless streams of suggestions from social networks, blogs and microblogs.

YouTube has its own Russian superstars, some getting over 2 million views on every video they post. More and more shows  – like Minaev Live or GosDep – are now exclusively online, streaming live at certain times of the week, engaging with audiences via the likes of Twitter and Skype.

NEWS: Safer Internet Day 2012 celebrated in Albania

TIRANA, 7 February 2012 - Safer Internet Day 2012 brought together the Albanian Minister of Innovation and Technology, mobile operators, parents, teachers, civil society and NGOs in an attempt to increase child safety on line with concrete measures.

The Ministry of Innovation recently started an awareness campaign (1-17 February 2012) in order to build a strong commitment around this issue. During his speech, Minister Pollo highlighted the need to adopt the best European practices and sign an ICT Code of Ethics. "We should offer the Albanian children a possibility to report cases of abuse while they use the Internet."

EVENTS: Student playwriting competition marks Safer Internet Day 2012 (BULGARIA)

The Bulgarian Safer Internet Centre (SIC) team has developed two lessons introducing the theme to the children: to motivate and help them think about various possible situations, which are resolved by co-operation between a child and an adult, and to provide them with a simple guide on how to develop a scenario. The prizes are smartphones from the Mobiltel mobile operator, multimedia sets from Microsoft Bulgaria, and a challenging experience together.

The Bulgarian SIC have already received about 40 scenarios from children of different ages and schools all over the country. The topic of connecting generations has been developed into various creative ideas. The children organised themselves and worked in teams together with their teachers and parents. Most of the topics are related to online risks. Initial observations are that most of the children are sensitive to the existing dangers online. A lot of the stories in the elaborated scenarios have a positive outcome: this shows children's belief in a safer online world.

The three best scenarios will be chosen by a jury and the winners will work with professional theatre directors to prepare themselves for performing on stage at the national SID 2012 event. The event will be held in a theatre in Sofia and, after a brief press conference, the winners will have their minutes of glory in front of the audience.

The new “Eastern Partnership Youth Window" is created!

For years 2012-2013 European Commission allocated additional funds for cooperation within Youth in Action Programme with the countries of the Eastern Partnership  countries creating “Eastern Partnership Youth Window”.

This window will provide additional funding  in order to support a higher number of projects and participants from the six Eastern Partnership countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine. The additional funds will be managed both at centralised and decentralised level.

It documents the complex reality of the Roma culture and its system of traditions, its set of values, its everyday life, and reveals the inevitable effects that emerge from these. With the help of the short films we are looking for answers to such questions as how historical tradition and the course of contemporary life affects Roma families and their coexistence with the majority nation, and what are the possibilities and limitations of integration from the point of view of members of the minority.

The call for entries to participate in the Sarajevo City of Film 2012 project will be open from 3^rd November to 9^th December 2011.

The goal of the project is to support and instigate cooperation between young filmmakers in Southeast Europe, and the call for entries will be open, as in previous years, only for the participants of one of the two previous editions of the Sarajevo Talent Campus.

In this way, the Sarajevo Film Festival wishes to give the chance to directors, screenwriters, actors and producers, who attended the Sarajevo Talent Campus during the 16th and 17th editions of the Sarajevo Film Festival, to present their talent and gain additional experience by making short films.
