How to involve parents in the media education of children?

The Evens Foundation aims to stimulate efforts to increase media literacy in Europe – mainly by raising critical awareness of the media and by encouraging media creativity. Both of these contribute to the development of highly aware, active and responsible citizens. The Foundation subscribes to the European Commission’s view of media literacy as “an extremely important factor for active citizenship in today's information society, as literacy was at the beginning of the twentieth century”. The Foundation continues to support a selection of European projects that contribute to raising the media literacy level of European citizens.

After the great success of its publication ‘Media Literacy in Europe: 12 good practices that will inspire you’, the Foundation decided to publish a second media literacy magazine in 2015. Again, we will highlight 12 good European practices that can inspire others with their work, but this time we will exclusively focus on projects that actively include parents (and grandparents) in their media educational activities.

FUNDING: NED offers grants for media projects

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is seeking proposals from nongovernmental organizations, including independent media worldwide, for projects that advance democratic goals and strengthen democratic institutions.

Deadline: 17 January 2014

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is seeking proposals from nongovernmental organizations, including independent media worldwide, for projects that advance democratic goals and strengthen democratic institutions.

NED encourages applications from organizations working in diverse environments including newly established democracies, semi-authoritarian countries, highly repressive societies and countries undergoing democratic transition.

Grant amounts vary depending on the size and scope of the projects, but the average grant lasts 12 months and is around US$50,000.

NED is interested in proposals from organizations for nonpartisan programs that seek to: promote and defend human rights and the rule of law, support freedom of information and independent media, and promote accountability and transparency.

The deadline is Jan. 17.

Opening of the Eastern Partnership Youth Window, new projects application deadlines and budget changes.
The new “Eastern Partnership Youth Window" is created!

For years 2012-2013 European Commission allocated additional funds for cooperation within Youth in Action Programme with the countries of the Eastern Partnership  countries creating “Eastern Partnership Youth Window”.

This window will provide additional funding  in order to support a higher number of projects and participants from the six Eastern Partnership countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine. The additional funds will be managed both at centralised and decentralised level.

FUNDING / OPPORTUNITIES: European Youth Foundation seeking applications from eligible organizations for the 2012 grants program (EUROPE)

Each year the EYF allocates about € 3 million to nongovernmental organisations that directly assist young people aged 15 to 30. Since 1972, more than 300,000 young people, mostly from member states, have benefited from EYF supported activities. Each year, the EYF supports some 300 projects involving more than 15,000 young people.

Its purpose is to encourage co-operation among young people in Europe by providing financial support to such European youth activities which serve the promotion of peace, understanding and co-operation in a spirit of respect for the Council of Europe’s fundamental values such as human rights, democracy, tolerance and solidarity.

Call for applications

EYF is currently seeking applications from eligible organizations for its 2012 grants program under several categories.

Who can apply for a grant ?

• International non-governmental youth organisations or networks;
• National, regional or local non-governmental youth organisations or networks;
• Other non-governmental structures involved in youth work.

What activities can be financed by the EYF?

• educational, social, cultural and humanitarian activities of a European character;
• activities aiming at strengthening peace and co-operation in Europe;
• activities designed to promote closer co-operation and better understanding among young people in Europe, particularly by developing the exchange of information;
• activities intended to stimulate mutual aid in Europe and in the developing countries for cultural, educational and social purposes;
• studies, research and documentation on youth matters.
• Participants are between the ages of 15 and 30 and activities are held (as a general rule) in one or more member states of the EYF.

What are the different grant categories?

• Category A: International youth meetings;
• Category B: Youth activities other than meetings (e.g. publications, campaigns, websites, CD-Roms);
• Category C: Administration of international non-governmental youth organisations and networks;
• Category D: Pilot projects or pilot projects on Human Rights Education (Category D-HRE).

Deadlines are different for different categories.

FUNDING / OPPORTUNITIES: Call for Proposals: Promoting Youth Participation in Response to Xenophobia and Racism in Europe

The Open Society Foundations place a high priority on protecting and improving the lives of people across societies, especially marginalized and excluded communities. The Open Society Youth Initiative seeks to identify, support, and promote the work of European youth seeking to combat xenophobia and intolerance and to promote inclusion.

Proposals to promote the full participation of youth with mental or physical disabilities in the cultural, economic, political and social life of their communities are also strongly encouraged. For the purpose of this call, Europe will be defined as the member states of the European Union as well as Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, and Ukraine.

Proposals are sought that will focus on areas such as: political and civic engagement of youth; integration of minority and majority communities; use of new media tools to counter xenophobia and tackle discrimination; awareness raising of the importance and benefits of inclusion; as well as those that seek to promote explicitly, though not exclusively, the inclusion of minority groups, like the Roma, in the economic, social, political and social life of the community.

NEWS: EC Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou Has Growth Plan for MEDIA

Program funds and supports development and distribution of European films

CANNES -- The European Union’s MEDIA program will continue after 2013 and, if EC commissioner Androulla Vassiliou gets her way, will get even bigger.

Vassiliou, the EC commissioner for education, culture, multilingualism and youth told The Hollywood Reporter in Cannes she wants to continue and, if possible, expand the MEDIA program, which provides hundreds of millions in funding and support for the development and distribution of European films.

“We want to be certain that the MEDIA program will continue and will retain its identity and its independence,” Vassiliou said. “We, in fact, want to expand it, both in terms of budget and also in scope.”

OPPORTUNITIES / FUNDING: Start-up program supports first-time filmmakers (MIDDLE EAST)

First-time filmmakers can apply for financial and production assistance.

The BLOOM! Cine Startups Initiative, sponsored by Canon Middle East and D-Seven Motion Pictures, will provide support to independent filmmakers through assistance with permits, fund raising, script editing and marketing. The initiative also includes access to cameras, freelance professionals and postproduction facilities for a substantially reduced cost. Short films are preferred, but documentaries and feature length films are also considered.

The accepted budgets for films ranges from AED30,000 to AED300,000. D-Seven Motion Pictures will then allocate a 50-70% discount. Five to seven projects will be accepted a year.

The ideal candidate would have a first draft script. The program is open to all nationalities and ages, but projects must have an angle relevant to the United Arab Emirates and the Arab world.

FUNDING: European Neighbourhood programme (ECF)

ECF is a catalyst that builds bridges through culture. We have long focused on strengthening collaboration within countries, between countries and across Europe.

We will continue to invest in the next generation of cultural organisations and actors in EU neighbourhood countries by helping develop their capacities and build networks through to 2012 and beyond. This process aims to enrich Europe by connecting the voices, skills and potential of those who often feel disconnected with the rest of Europe.

Our European Neighbourhood programme works in close collaboration with local partners. We are specifically focusing on the Arab-Mediterranean region, Moldova, Turkey, Ukraine and Belarus during 2010 – 2012.

The programme aims are to build a network of individuals and cultural organisations working for change in specific neighbourhood countries (mentioned above) who are hubs within their artistic communities; to stimulate co-development among the hubs and connections with EU-based art communities and political institutions and to enable the hubs to articulate their policy needs at all levels – from regional to European.

Programme activities

• Organise regional meetings between European Neighbourhood partners and guests from the EU

• Develop and launch a new exchange scheme for skills exchange and partnership development across the EU and the European Neighbourhood - specifically Moldova and Ukraine (see below)

• Providing start-up funding for regional hub initiatives – also when in conjunction with local communities

• Organise regular capacity building programmes and networking opportunities in the neighbourhood region

New exchange scheme - Tandem

We recently launched a new scheme called Tandem in conjunction with partners. It is an opportunity for cultural professionals from European Union countries and cultural professionals from Moldova, Turkey and Ukraine to exchange skills, network, and get a fresh insight into developing partnerships. The deadline has now closed for the scheme with Moldova and Ukraine, but will open for the scheme connecting with Turkish and EU cultural professionals in early April 2011.

With assistance from the Government of Denmark, the Frontlines Forum is funding local projects on climate change impacts and adaptation.

What are they funding?
Community-level projects focusing on local experiences with climate change impacts and adaptation. These could involve field research, interviews with community members, workshops, photo projects, film projects, etc.

Who are they funding?
Proposals can be made by interested groups or individuals, for example, local and indigenous organisations, research centres, researchers, graduate students with interdisciplinary training, community members (youth groups, women, elders) etc.

OPPORTUNITIES: Grants for youth NGOs (CIS)

The National Youth Council of Russia in cooperation with the Ministry of Sports, tourism and youth policy of the Russian Federation, the Foundation "Russian world" and the Foundation for international cooperation fives grants for the joint youth projects of youth organizations form Eastern Europe, South Eastern Europe and CIS countries. The aim of the programme is to contribute to the intercultural dialogue between young people from Russia and CIS countries and South Eastern Europe.

Objectives: - to study and support innovative methods of organization of youth, exchanges, internships and projects; - to develop and realize bilateral projects of youth cooperation in the sphere of culture, awareness, non-formal education and public diplomacy; - to develop common information space.

The grants cannot exceed 350.000 rubles (about 7.770€) and can be grants only for joint projects of Russian youth NGOs with youth NGOs from one of the following countries: Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia, Tadzhikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine.

OPPORTUNITIES: Media Trust announces new youth media grant strand (UK)

Girls looking at laptopYouth charity Media Trust has announced that it will make grants of between £1,500 and £5,000 available to the UK's youth media projects.

The organisation's Mediabox fund, supported by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), will open its Mini Mediabox strand on 1 May, an ongoing project without an application deadline.

Open to individuals aged between 13 and 19, the grants are aimed at providing grassroots and community youth organisations with funding for creative media projects.

The charity's Mid and Big Mediabox strands are also open until 7 and 27 May respectively and are geared towards supporting more established youth initiatives in the UK.

All Roads Seed Grant Program

The All Roads Seed Grant Program funds film projects by and about indigenous and underrepresented minority-culture filmmakers year-round and from all reaches of the globe. The program seeks filmmakers who bring their lives and communities to light through first-person storytelling.

Submission deadlines are quarterly on the 15th of each March, June, September, and December. Award notifications are made approximately six weeks after each of these dates.
