OPPORTUNITIES: New course in New Media - call for applications (SOUTH CAUCASUS)

GO Group Media and Prague-based organization Transitions Online are inviting applications from young practicing journalists and journalism students from across the South Caucasus for an opportunity to be trained to use new media tools to produce impactful journalism.

Over the next ten months, the participants of the project 'Empowering Journalists to Promote Reconciliation in the South Caucasus’ will engage in the production of short multimedia featuring stories of lived experience told by their fellow community members.

Every participant will be presented with a smartphone for their filming sessions. Later on, trainees who will have demonstrated the greatest potential as learners will be rewarded with a chance to participate in an International Photojournalism Course in Prague.

Candidates are expected to speak Russian and have basic computer skills. Please send your CV and motivation letter writing ‘Multimedia Course’ in a subject line to maka.tsnobiladze@gogroupmedia.net

ARTICLES: Using Public Art to Promote Social Change in Armenia

Public art with a social agenda is something fairly new in Armenia. Young artist and activistLea Mkhitaryan recently founded the Eiva Arts Foundation to promote development of social consciousness through art. 

The organization’s People Daily: Art and Media project, funded by a small grant from Internews, aims to raise public awareness of human rights and social issues in Armenia through visual media content (illustrated stories, photo stories, PSAs and other forms of interactive visual arts), street art installations, and participatory public events. The foundation’s slick and colorful website, Eiva.am, got over 13,000 hits in October.

OPPORTUNITIES: Student essay contest open (CAUCASUS)

Students who are citizens of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Russia and Turkey, studying in their home countries or abroad can participate in this contest.

Caucasus International (CI), the international academic journal,  has launched a new essay competition for undergraduate students. Applicants should submit essays that address the question: “How can the South Caucasus achieve regional integration and security?” 

The essays should be about 1,200 to 1,500 words, and should be original, unpublished work that demonstrates clear thinking and good writing skills. Entries must be written in English. Only one essay per participant is permitted.

The winning essay will be publish in the next issue of the journal. The winner will also receive a cash prize of US$400, and two honorable mentions will receive a one-year subscription to Caucasus International.

The deadline is August 10.

Opening of the Eastern Partnership Youth Window, new projects application deadlines and budget changes.
The new “Eastern Partnership Youth Window" is created!

For years 2012-2013 European Commission allocated additional funds for cooperation within Youth in Action Programme with the countries of the Eastern Partnership  countries creating “Eastern Partnership Youth Window”.

This window will provide additional funding  in order to support a higher number of projects and participants from the six Eastern Partnership countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine. The additional funds will be managed both at centralised and decentralised level.

NEWS: Prix Jeunesse 2010 Regional Youth Jury held in Tbilisi, Georgia

TBILISI, Georgia - April 7/8, 2010

Ten Georgian teenagers became the latest members of the Prix Jeunesse International 2010 Youth Jury this week in Tbilisi.

Over two days, they watched 16 selected high-quality children's programmes and judged them to find a regional winner. Together with youth juries in Canada, Venezuela, Ghana, Italy, Nepal and Syria, they will determine who will be the international winner in the category for ages 12-15.

Internews Georgia youth program Our Express is getting back on TV air. Starting from March 26 Our Express will be aired through Mze TV on Fridays at 19:30 hrs.

The program was left without TV air in January 2009 though the TV stories were posted on its website http://blog.teentv.ge.

DOTCOM, a program implemented by PH International and sponsored by the US Department of State, is an online initiative using blogs and video to bring American, Armenian and Azerbaijani teenagers together to work on creating socially conscious media.

With the ongoing conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed territory of Nagorno Karabakh understandably creating some problems, especially when ten teenagers from each of the two countries met up with their American counterparts in the U.S. last month, Program Director Elizabeth Métraux speaks candidly about some of the challenges experienced so far as well as some of the program's successes.

Internews Georgia seeking youth for program in TV production

Internews Georgia invites youth ages 14 to 18 to participate in the production of a TV program. Deadline: June 19.

Semi-finalists will receive a one-week training in the basics of journalism. Six selected participants will take part in the production of the TV program "Our Express," beginning in September.

Applicants must be sociable and creative and have a good command of Georgian and Russian.
