PROJECTS / RADIO: Media foster cross-cultural connections for Moroccans

“Three, two, one, record!” Melanie, a German student, and Bouchra, a Moroccan student, both in their 20s, are producing their first radio interview as they stand in front of their peers and members of civil society in a Marrakech community center. “What do you learn in school in Europe?” Bouchra asks Melanie. “Why are you studying philosophy in Morocco?” Melanie questions Bouchra.

It was an exciting moment for the young reporters, who were pioneering the international youth media project “We are the future of Morocco,” organized by the German non-governmental organization Radijojo World Children’s Media Network. In a world in which misunderstandings between the Arab world and the West abound, and youth voices in both regions often go unheard, Radijojo’s mission is to create media based youth empowerment as a source for free expression, intercultural dialogue and peace

EVENTS / OPPORTUNITIES: Apply for the 2011 European Youth Media Convention - "Whistleblowing - A New Competition for Journalists?"

Journalists are facing competition: Platforms like wikileaks reveal scandals, allow unprecedented insights into political strategies, and begin to impinge on the role of the journalist. Apparently, the public receives an additional level of control and knowledge. But is unconditional transparency of political systems, that so-called whistleblowers usually strive for, always beneficial for democracy? And how should journalists respond if they want to prevent a takeover of their distinctive role?

During this year's European Youth Media Convention, which will take place between the 3rd and the 6th of August in Berlin (Germany), we will try to find answers to these questions and outline the future for young media makers. Participants will have the opportunity to meet up with 39 other young media makers from all over Europe and outline the situations of their own country.

You can attend lectures and discuss with experts. In addition, you will get the chance to produce journalistic print-, video-, audio- or photography content according to your interest at the event.

If you want to be a part of the convention, already have experience in journalism, and if you are between 18 and 25 years old then apply online by sending us a short motivation letter to participateEYMC2011@jugenpresse.de .

There is no participation fee. Free board and lodging is provided. Travel costs are not reimbursed

The application deadline is the 30th of July. For further questions about your application or the event, do not hesitate to contact Sebastian Schütz ( s.schuetz@jugendpresse.de ).

The European Youth Media Convention is organized and funded by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, the Youth Press Germany and the European Youth Press.

The German children's channel KI.KA will carry a special report on the ICDB called "Finally in School! Ben in Rwanda," a show that will explore a situation where children's rights aren't always realized in the everyday lives of kids.

Ben visits Rwanda and gets to see both children in school and those who are not so fortunate. He visits the Murama School in the Murama/Gasabo District, which takes part in the "Schools for Africa" project of UNICEF. There he sees young people taking charge of their fates with the help of education. He also visits with a number of other children who are not so fortunate to go to school.

The show's purpose is to encourage German children to stand up for children elsewhere and to challenge the stereotypes that Western media often portrays to its spectators.

Buffy Saint-Marie

You've got to know the wonderful musician, Buffy Saint-Marie, who's songs have been sung by stars like Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Donovan and Joe Cocker. For many years she has brought her Native Indian culture to the attention of the world and as a result, she encounted a lot of problems: her songs were banned from many radio stations (but thankfully that's all over now). For children, she founded an organisation that enables young Native Indians to preserve the culture of their ancestors.

WORKSHOPS: Film ab! 20 Jahre Kinderrechte (IN GERMAN)

Film ab! 20 Jahre Kinderrechte

Die Kinderrechtskonvention der Vereinten Nationen feiert dieses Jahr ihren 20. Geburtstag.
