OPPORTUNITIES: New course in New Media - call for applications (SOUTH CAUCASUS)

GO Group Media and Prague-based organization Transitions Online are inviting applications from young practicing journalists and journalism students from across the South Caucasus for an opportunity to be trained to use new media tools to produce impactful journalism.

Over the next ten months, the participants of the project 'Empowering Journalists to Promote Reconciliation in the South Caucasus’ will engage in the production of short multimedia featuring stories of lived experience told by their fellow community members.

Every participant will be presented with a smartphone for their filming sessions. Later on, trainees who will have demonstrated the greatest potential as learners will be rewarded with a chance to participate in an International Photojournalism Course in Prague.

OPPORTUNITIES: United Nations Internet Governance Forum, Baku, Azerbaijan, November 2012

The United Nations Internet Governance Forum is hosting their annual conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 6-9, 2012.

The series of plenary sessions and workshops will focus on Internet safety, use of social media for social change, digital citizenship, etc. The UNIGF is looking for youth ages 18-22 to join the conversations, which will include social media practitioners and digital experts from around the globe, government representatives, reps from the world's largest Internet companies, digital activists, and others.

WORKSHOPS / TRAINING / ONEMINUTESJR: Young offenders and victims of violence against children cooperate in video story-telling workshop in Baku

BAKU, 9 March 2012 - Fifteen children and teenagers came together this week in the capital of Azerbaijan to share their stories on juvenile justice and violence against children in a OneMinutesJr video workshop. The 5-day training is part of a wider project to end torture and ill treatment of children, supported by the European Union in partnership with UNICEF.

In cooperation with the NGO Reliable Future, the Psycho-Social Rehabilitation Center in Baku and the One Minutes Foundation, UNICEF Azerbaijan invited young offenders as well as children who have been victims of violence to attend the workshop. The aim of the 5-day training was to develop one-minute videos written, filmed and produced by the young participants, showing their personal views of their experiences around the topics "children in conflict with the law" and "violence against children".

During the first two days of the training, the children spent most of the time developing their stories with the OneMinutesJr facilitators from Russia, Georgia and Germany. The topics of the workshop, experencies of both young offenders and children who are victims of violence, demanded a very sensitive approach.

NEWS: Young People speak out on education for human rights

A new 12-minute film, “Education for Human Rights… Young People talking”, aims to raise awareness of key human rights issues in schools around the world.

Produced by UNESCO and realized by pupils of UNESCO Associated Schools in 10 countries, it shows adolescents of secondary-school age freely expressing their opinions about gender, diversity, violence, exclusion and other questions.

Viewers are invited to appreciate how young people understand and experience concepts and ideals of human rights in countries as different as Albania, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Canada, Dominican Republic, France, Indonesia, Lebanon and Uganda.

The film can be used as a teaching tool for secondary schools to introduce core topics of human rights education and initiate classroom discussions.

EVENTS: «Youth Participation in Social Transformations: Initiatives and Participation»

On 2-3 March 2011 Moscow will host a scientific and policy oriented conference «Youth and Social Transformations: Involvements and Initiatives». The conference will be organized by the UNESCO Office in Moscow and the International Non-Governmental Organization «Federation for Peace and Conciliation» as a part of the UN International Year of Youth (resolution 64/134) which is held under a motto «Dialogue and Mutual Understanding».

The aim of the project is to set up a multilateral dialogue on the modern youth policy in the countries of the CIS within a scientific and policy oriented conference which will bring together researchers, experts, scientists, teachers and students, UNESCO Chairs, youth organizations, non-governmental organizations and policymakers.

The conference will see a presentation and discussion of the results of pilot research projects on the ways of activating the participation of youth in social transformations conducted in Russia and Azerbaijan in 2010 with the support of the UNESCO Moscow Office. In accordance with the conference outcomes a policy brief will be prepared on the improvement of the youth policies in the cluster countries.

European Youth Press – network of young media makers in cooperation with Academy for Peace and Development invites you to participate in the seminar “Young Media Makers Preach and Practice Peaceful Journalism”. The implementation of the seminar is possible due to kind support of the European Youth Foundation, Council of Europe.

The aim of the seminar is to explore what peace journalism is and how it can be used by young journalists to foster peace building and conflict transformation.

The seminar will consider the ways in which peace and conflict transformation is to be represented in the media and will discuss the the role of young media makers in engaging in promoting peace building, conflict prevention and transformation. The participants will not only get a better comprehension of the peaceful journalism concept, but also will have the opportunity to put into practice their freshly gained skills. In addition to that, the seminar will tackle the issues such as Cultural Diversity and Intercultural Dialogue as major factors in supporting stability and intercultural understanding in Europe. The workshops will be led by CoE trainers’s pool and experienced journalists in field of peace and conflict reporting.

Who can participate: 22 young people (age 18-27) interested in peace journalism, journalists, bloggers from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia and Spain.

Where: Kobuleti (20 km north of Batumi), Georgia.

When: 19 – 26 June 2010

Costs: Accommodation and food will be fully covered by organisers. Travel costs – participants will be reimbursed up to 200 euro upon presentation of relevant proofs.

INTERVIEWS: Armenia-Azerbaijan: An interview with Elizabeth Métraux

DOTCOM, a program implemented by PH International and sponsored by the US Department of State, is an online initiative using blogs and video to bring American, Armenian and Azerbaijani teenagers together to work on creating socially conscious media.

With the ongoing conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed territory of Nagorno Karabakh understandably creating some problems, especially when ten teenagers from each of the two countries met up with their American counterparts in the U.S. last month, Program Director Elizabeth Métraux speaks candidly about some of the challenges experienced so far as well as some of the program's successes.
