“If we are talking about national wellbeing, we are talking about jobs and the power of entrepreneurship to create new wealth,” he said.

He pointed out that there is real motivation in the Arab world, with 26 per cent of Arab youth wanting to start their own businesses, compared to just 4 per cent in the US. However, he said, the education system is failing would-be entrepreneurs and must be improved.

CONFERENCES / EVENTS: A Children & Young People Now one-day conference

A Children & Young People Now one-day conference
26 September 2012, London

Measuring the impact of projects has become essential for all those who commission and provide services for children, young people and families. Being able to demonstrate positive, quantifiable outcomes gives confidence to investors and funders, and informs good decision making.
Critically, it is central to enhancing the lives of the vulnerable children, young people and families for whom you are responsible, and ensures that what you are doing delivers the best possible value.

Achieving Positive Outcomes for Children, Young People and Families provides a day of top-level information and practical insights from many of the sector’s leading practitioners. Delegates will be able to explore the issues around evidence-based decision making, partnership working across multiple agencies, measurement of early intervention benefits and the government’s current payment-by-results projects.

It promises to be an essential day for all those who commission and provide services for children, young people and families working within local authorities, the voluntary sector and the private sector.

EVENTS: Belgrade hosting 6th International Youth Media Summit

From August 1 to 12, Belgrade is hosting the Sixth International Youth Media Summit. 83 delegates from 20 countries have arrived to present their activities in the field of media communication and to exchange mutual experience. More from Olivera Milovanovic.

The International Youth Media Summit was founded in Los Angeles in 2006, as a reaction to the attack on World Trade Center in New York on 11 September 2001, the director of the Media Education Centre, Miomir Rajčević, told a press conference. Summit participants decided to commence joint work on an optimal exploration of media with a view to popularizing the opinion of young people on world major problems. 86 delegates from 26 countries took part in the summit in LA. On that occasion, they concluded there were seven major issues present in almost all the countries worldwide.

Those are: Discrimination/Racism, Poverty, Violence, Health, Environment, Women’s Rights and Youth Empowerment. All these issues will be discussed in Belgrade as well, with special emphasis on strengthening the role of delegates from Western Balkan countries. The summit also aims to attain a sufficient level of media literacy among the young in order that they become interactive partners and not only passive consumers of media products. Rajčević says that the Media Education Centre is the main office of the summit and its task is not only to coordinate all the activities of the summit, but also to use experience acquired from previous gatherings for the reconciliation process in former Yugoslav states.

EVENTS / OPPORTUNITIES: Apply for the 2011 European Youth Media Convention - "Whistleblowing - A New Competition for Journalists?"

Journalists are facing competition: Platforms like wikileaks reveal scandals, allow unprecedented insights into political strategies, and begin to impinge on the role of the journalist. Apparently, the public receives an additional level of control and knowledge. But is unconditional transparency of political systems, that so-called whistleblowers usually strive for, always beneficial for democracy? And how should journalists respond if they want to prevent a takeover of their distinctive role?

During this year's European Youth Media Convention, which will take place between the 3rd and the 6th of August in Berlin (Germany), we will try to find answers to these questions and outline the future for young media makers. Participants will have the opportunity to meet up with 39 other young media makers from all over Europe and outline the situations of their own country.

You can attend lectures and discuss with experts. In addition, you will get the chance to produce journalistic print-, video-, audio- or photography content according to your interest at the event.

If you want to be a part of the convention, already have experience in journalism, and if you are between 18 and 25 years old then apply online by sending us a short motivation letter to participateEYMC2011@jugenpresse.de .

There is no participation fee. Free board and lodging is provided. Travel costs are not reimbursed

The application deadline is the 30th of July. For further questions about your application or the event, do not hesitate to contact Sebastian Schütz ( s.schuetz@jugendpresse.de ).

The European Youth Media Convention is organized and funded by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, the Youth Press Germany and the European Youth Press.
