Colombian producers win UNICEF Special Prize at the 50th edition of Prix Jeunesse
by Chris SchueppMUNICH, Germany, 4 June 2014 - The Colombian production "Te Recreo" ("I so believe you") by Canal Capital from Bogota is the winner of this year's UNICEF Special Prize at the Prix Jeunesse. The award was given to the producers and directors of the successful local children's TV show during the 50th edition of the Prix Jeunesse, the "Oscars of children's TV", in Munich, Germany.
Hundreds of children's TV makers and broadcasters from more than 60 countries had gathered in the Bavarian capital in the south of Germany for six days to watch, discuss and further develop children's programming under the motto "Feelings in focus - Emotions in children's TV".
For over 20 years, UNICEF has been encouraging broadcasters to create programming that highlights children’s issues and rights, and ideally empowers children and young people through the medium of TV. In the decision to award "Te Recreo" from Colombia with the award this year, special attention was paid to the fact that this program truly accomplishes what UNICEF has been pushing for. It is a program not only for kids but also by kids. It gives children a voice and puts them in front of the camera, giving a platform for a diversity of children to share what is important to them and what they want to change in their environment or society. It combines a fun, spirited atmosphere with serious issues, giving kids a chance to learn about the lives and situations of kids in other communities.
"Te Recreo" is currently in its 2nd season and has been running on local TV in Bogota and on a national cable station throughout Colombia since August 2013. More than 35 episodes have been aired so far and in each episode, more than 50 children from different schools and communities in Bogota take part in the development and production of the program. The show is funded by the Department of Eduction of the City of Bogota.
After receiving the award in Munich, the producer, directors and the screen-writer of the show who were all present at Prix Jeunesse were overjoyed. "This is the first time Colombia wins an award at the Prix Jeunesse. We're absolutely thrilled. It's been a lot of hard work to put this show together, but the reactions have been so overwhelming and the UNICEF award now really encourages us to keep going and get even better in bringing up all these important issues of the children," said Mónica Baquero García, the producer of "Te Recreo", after the 2 1/2-hour awards gala in Munich.
All the winners of this year's Prix Jeunesse can be found here. The Special Gender Equity Prize went to a very courageous production called "Burka Avenger" from Pakistan.
The next Prix Jeunesse takes place in Munich in 2016. More information about events, news and training opportunities is available at www.prixjeunesse.de.

NEWS: PRIX JEUNESSE training in Macedonia
by Angela Dimitrovska, OXO, Macedonia
In December 2009, Barbara Kolucki came to us and said: “You are making such good children educational programmes in Macedonia; you have to visit PRIX JEUNESSE – it is the most inspirational place in the world for people doing this kind of media!”
Six months later, we were on a plane to Munich wondering what awaited us. It was beyond our expectations – 6 days of watching programmes, no sleep (because we wanted to socialize with everyone), endless discussions, laughs and tears. These were our production’s most inspirational days outside the office and the television studios.
Since 2010, we’ve become closer to the world’s biggest children’s media research center and had the honor of meeting the PRIX team. We produced videos for the Guessing Games and organized a PRIX JEUNESSE International Youth Jury in 2012.

Next, it was the Suitcase time!
With the support of Goethe institute Skopje, OXO brought the PRIX JEUNESSE Suitcase to Macedonia. Jens Ripke from ZDF/Germany guided us through the two-day workshop, “Watch, Learn and Grow with Children’s TV”.
We had faith in everything except in the number of participants. Macedonia suffers from a lack of children’s shows and TV products, thus, there are few experts working in the field. But, look what happened! 30 people visited the event: producers, actors, hosts, teachers, directors, psychologists, musicologists, and more.

TRAINING / WORKSHOPS: The best of children’s television seminar in Cyprus
The two-day event will take place on December 7th and 8th at the Goethe-Institut Cyprus hall in Nicosia's buffer zone starting from 16:00pm, coordinated by Prix Jeunesse representative Kirsten Schneid from Munich/Germany.
The Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) is media sponsor of the event.
This is the second time a Prix Jeunesse International screening is being held in Cyprus, aimed at encouraging dialogue, a deeper understanding of quality in children's media, and professional cooperation in the field of children's media between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.
"Children in Europe spend an average of 150 minutes a day in front of the television, but are they watching programmes that are educational, stimulating, and age-appropriate?" said Björn Luley, director of the Goethe-Institut in Nicosia.
"We want to showcase how children's television can develop intercultural understanding in Cyprus and across the world."

NEWS / ARTICLES: Pacific Islands Eager to Improve Children’s Media
by Barbara Kolucki, UNICEF Consultant, Children's Media and Tomas Jensen, Communication Specialist, UNICEF PacificThe week began with excitement and some trepi- dation. For the very first time, countries from the Pacific Islands met to learn about and produce innovative media for children and youth. The August 16-20 workshop in Suva, Fiji, included a wide range of 60 people from Fiji, Solomon Islands, Kiribati, and Vanuatu, most of whom had never met each other or worked together.
It included children's media producers in television and radio, but also journalists, artists, creative writers, graphic designers, musicians and people who work directly with disadvantaged and marginalized youth. Other participants included young people who are creating innovative productions after taking part in UNICEF communication workshops and several deaf or blind young adults, accompanied by interpreters.
Media for children is quite new in the Pacific. Often, producers with absolutely no experience are thrust into creating TV or radio for youth. As a result, they were eager to learn what others around the world do, in order to take their work to a new level of appropriateness and professionalism.

RESEARCH / STUDIES: Situation of Children‘s TV in Asia - A Survey Conducted by the PRIX JEUNESSE Foundation, 2009
This study gives an overview on the situation of children's TV in Asia. The data gathered in 20 Asian countries show the relation between productions that are produced in the country itself (in-country-production) and productions that are internationally acquired (bought-in production). It gives an overview on the type of channels - public or commercial/subscription - that arebroadcasting children's programmes, and examines what age-groups their children's programming is aiming at.
Introduction
Given the fact that TV plays a very important role in the life of most children, this research on the situation of children's TV in Asia wants to examine what sort of TV programmes are actually offered to the children in Asia. How much specific children's TV programming is available in Asia, in total and in each country that took part in this study? The study looked at where those children's programmes are being produced – are they local productions or internationally acquired shows.
The basic outcomes of this survey were presented at the Asia Media Summit 2009 in Macau. This research report offers data of the overall situation in Asia (meaning: all participating countries) as well as the data of each participating country.

ARTICLES / PROJECTS / CHILDREN'S TV: TV saves lives of underserved children - Diverse programs educate millions of needy kids (ETHIOPIA)
SUNNIER DAYS: Kami, a popular character from 'Takalani Sesame' (the South African version of 'Sesame Street'), exemplifies TV's efforts to improve the lives of children around the world.
In a small, top-floor production studio in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the patter of rain on the metal roof means an unwelcome break in production for the children's show, "Tsehai Loves Learning."
"We can't record our audio, the rain is too loud," says Shane Etzenhouser, who with wife Brukty Tigabu created the show in their living room in 2004. Now they and a three-person staff produce the Prix Jeunesse- and Japan Prize-winning program. It features a hand-puppet giraffe girl, Tsehai, and her friends, and is the world's only educational program for preschoolers in Ethiopia's official language, Amharic.
But the producers' challenges pale compared with the obstacles faced by their young viewers. All over the world, television is reaching out to millions of underserved children, who like those in Ethiopia have no public preschool and also have low literacy rates. Using puppetry, animation, scripted drama and kids' news, television is tackling not only literacy but issues like health, gender inequality and conflict resolution.
And it's changing lives. In Ethiopia, "Tsehai" reaches 5 million kids who otherwise wouldn't get anything close to preschool.
