EVENTS: Protecting the rights of children: the role of the Media Thursday

You are cordially invited to join a debate on the coverage of the rights of the children in the media led by Veronica Yates, Director of the Child Rights International Network (CRIN) and Shakuntala Banaji, Programme Director in Media, Communication and Development at the London School of Economics (LSE).

Internews Europe will present its research project assessing the role played by media in protecting and promoting child rights, undertaken with support from the IKEA foundation.

Concrete plans to strengthen the media in reporting on children's rights, by addressing specifically the lack of child-led and high-quality information available to the media, citizens and policy-makers, will be shared during the event.

ARTICLES: Using Public Art to Promote Social Change in Armenia

Public art with a social agenda is something fairly new in Armenia. Young artist and activistLea Mkhitaryan recently founded the Eiva Arts Foundation to promote development of social consciousness through art. 

The organization’s People Daily: Art and Media project, funded by a small grant from Internews, aims to raise public awareness of human rights and social issues in Armenia through visual media content (illustrated stories, photo stories, PSAs and other forms of interactive visual arts), street art installations, and participatory public events. The foundation’s slick and colorful website, Eiva.am, got over 13,000 hits in October.

NEWS: Young Chinese Journalists Travel Regionally to Research and Report on Industrial Production

Tough questions and stone-faced rebuttals from authorities don’t deter Wang Jing, a young journalist at China’s New Century magazine. "I feel I am a representative of the public,” said Jing, explaining her recent persistent enquiries of Thai officials. “If I must, I can apologize in private for aggressive questioning."

Jing was one of six Chinese journalists who took part in an October reporting trip through Thailand and Vietnam, where the journalists had opportunities to meet with and question government, industry, and NGO leaders involved in industrial production, essentially tracing the life cycle of products like plastics and liquefied natural gas and learning about the impacts of industrial production on health and the environment. The Chinese journalists clearly enjoyed the rare opportunity to ask questions freely and aggressively.

PROJECTS: Egyptian Youth Learn About Media, Civic and Social Participation

“I used to watch TV [and] radio, but never realized that I can do film or be an announcer,” said Mohamed Ahmed, one of 50 Egyptian students who recently took part in two social media camps designed to expand youth participation in Egyptian media.

Hosted by Internews in collaboration with the Egyptian Association for Media Creation and Development and the Hawaa Al-Mostakbel Society, the three-day camps served as a platform for students to learn practical media skills such as objectivity, accuracy, ethics and the negative consequences of hate speech, as well as work collaboratively and share knowledge with their peers.

ARTICLES: Young Storytellers Excel in Kenya

Like many young journalists, Rawlings Otieno, struggled to compete with seasoned journalists, who mainly report on politics. Then he began to carve out a niche for himself in health journalism.

“I realized that no one was interested in writing about health,” he says “So I took it up.”

Otieno, 26, writes for The Standard, one of the leading newspapers in Kenya. Internews’ health journalism training has helped him blossom in health storytelling.

In spite of the challenge of selling the health story in newsrooms bent on telling political stories, many journalists who have undergone Internews health journalism training and mentorship have been able to succeed in getting health issues publicized.

Saida Swaleh, a reporter with the Kenya Television Network, is only 23 years but has gained ample recognition for her work. In the inaugural 2012 Media Council of Kenya Awards, Swaleh was second runner up, in the young journalists of the year category.

“Where's my Seat?” is the title of a video post on the new youth online platform K-HUG (Kenya Health User-Generated Content). The post, by Violet Otindo, explores the government’s push to ensure that public transport vehicles are accessible to persons with disabilities.

Another poster, Henry Owino shares facts on the growing number of women infected by HIV and another explores the demonization of individuals with diseases stereotypically associated with their social class.

The site, launched by Internews in Kenya, encourages young people to discuss health matters on a platform that is easily accessible and engaging, so they can ultimately make better-informed decisions about their health. The content contributors tweet, post via Facebook, and add photos, audio, video, and text messages to the site.

IT/ PROJECTS: Partner Profile: In Malaysia, Youth Use Mapping to Address Religious Understanding

Kota Kita, a youth advocacy organization in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is conducting a series of interactive mapping projects for youth. Young, trained volunteers explore and learn about their communities on foot, noting and logging religious institutions into an online map that highlights the cultural and religious diversity of the area.

"It's a fun and rewarding experience,” said Tay Zhi Cong, an 18-year-old student participant. “I learned about the Hindu religion more in-depth and you start to see the whole picture of the religion. All the rituals and special things in the temples, I have not known it before."

Religion can be a sensitive topic in Malaysia, a majority-Muslim country that is home to a diverse range of ethnicities and religious beliefs. The project is oriented towards dialogue and cross-cultural understanding through media and the arts.

First Central African Journalism University Grads Join Internews Project | Internews

The Department of Journalism at the University of Bangui graduated its first class of professionally trained journalists this month, and celebrated their achievement at an Internews-sponsored ceremony.

“These new graduates will have a challenging job to do, which is to revolutionize the press in Central Africa,” said Jéremie Soupou, one of the graduates of the program.

Soupou is also the coordinator of The Association of Journalists for Human Rights (AJHR), Internews’ local partner in CAR. AJHR employs Soupou and four other graduates from the University. “We are honored by the interest that Internews has shown towards this new generation of journalists,” said Soupou.

ARTICLES: Indonesian Youth Tap into Social Media

With a population of over 230 million, Indonesia is the world’s fourth-most populous nation, and youth make up more than a quarter of the population. With more than 43 million Facebook accounts and 19 million active Twitter users, Indonesia boasts the second highest number of social media users in Asia.

The Internews Center for Innovation & Learning commissioned a new report, Indonesia: New Digital Nation?, which explores the potential and limitations of social media and new ICTs to support local community development and advocacy in Indonesia. With over 61 million young people, the number of citizens online in Indonesia is quickly growing. And while there is still vast room for digital progress there, the report investigates the country’s obstacles and opportunities to connect.

PROJECTS: Citizen Journalists from Afghanistan, Pakistan and India Connect on “Bridges of Youth”

Growing out of a Kabul-based master class on peace and citizen journalism, Pul-e-Jawan(Bridges of Youth) has become a platform and ongoing exchange of ideas for young people involved in media in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India.

"Pul-e-Jawan is the only platform that I know where nationals of the three nations discuss and share their thoughts on regional issues," said Hameed Tasal, a web developer and blogger from Kabul. "It provided me with an opportunity to share my own experiences and thoughts with this special group."

Fifteen young bloggers, citizen journalists, filmmakers and technologists gathered together for the first time last fall to discuss security issues with policymakers, NGO representatives, academics, journalists and experts in the field. The workshop focused on how to use online and social media tools to address social causes, common challenges, and shared aspirations in the three countries.

New Initiative Will Experiment, Capture and Share Innovative Approaches From Around the World

(April 6, 2011) Internews, the nonprofit that has championed local media development in more than 70 countries worldwide, is excited to announce the creation of the Internews Center for Innovation, Research & Learning.

Based in Washington, DC and operating globally, the Center aims to harness the potential of digital technologies and innovative approaches to better meet the information needs of communities around the world. The Center will also serve as a hub to inform and engage others in the fields of media, information technology and development.

Internews’ numerous ongoing field projects already represent a laboratory of innovative activity that can be captured, shared, and taken to scale. Recent projects with local partners around the globe include: text-message news reporting in Pakistan; pioneering “Radio over Internet Protocol” (ROIP) in Afghanistan; social media projects for Egyptian youth; crowd-sourced conflict resolution reporting and mapping in Kenya; and, the first-ever Twitter campaign to cover elections in Ukraine.

NEWS / PHOTOGRAPHY: Ukrainian Youth to Go on Photography Assignment with National Geographic and Internews

(June 9, 2010)—Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Jay Dickman and fellow National Geographic contributing photographer Matt Moyer will give 20 students from the Autonomous Republic of Crimea in Ukraine a unique opportunity to learn about and document the coastline of the Crimean peninsula during National Geographic Photo Camp 2010.

From Monday, June 14, to Friday, June 18, the youth will photograph, edit and design a portrait of the Black Sea and the Crimean coast, with special attention to the region’s natural environment, economic resources and the students’ own connection with water. The Photo Camp is presented in partnership with Internews, an international media development organization that is currently working in Ukraine with funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

ARTICLES / RADIO: Afghanistan’s Airways: Voices of Youth, Women and People with Disabilities

(May 19, 2010) Children who are forced to beg, cigarette smoking and access to education are just a few of the issues discussed on Radio Kodak, a program that follows the activities of a fictional radio station run by a group of children. The program includes news, interviews and roundtables conducted by children with a focus on peace-building and other social issues.

Radio Kodak is part of Internews' national production unit, Salam Watandar (Hello Countrymen), that was launched in 2003 in Afghanistan.

NEWS / RADIO: Radio provides a vital link to families amidst the children's emergency in Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, 2 February 2010 – A cacophony of songs and voices drifts from the tented camp as thousands of handheld radios transmit entertainment and, more important, information.

A UNICEF public service announcement on nutrition blares out of several radios tuned into Port-au-Prince's Radio One. The station is just one of more than 20 radio outlets in the Haitian capital that are working with Internews, a UNICEF partner and international media development organization providing news reports to hundreds of thousands of people affected by the 12 January earthquake.

Internews Network in Kyrgyzstan is inviting third and fourth year students to participate in an annual journalism school from January 20 to February 7, 2010. Deadline to apply: January 15, 2010.
