ARTICLES: Four Haitian filmmakers explore conditions for children two years after the quake

By Mariana Palavra
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, 12 January 2012 – UNICEF challenged young Haitian filmmakers to reveal how they view their country – and its conditions for children – two years after the January 2010 earthquake.
“This film project is all about listening to the Haitian voice and understanding children's lives,” said Thomas Nybo, coordinator of the project. “We issued a call for short-film proposals, either fiction or documentaries, and we chose four filmmakers, three of whom are from Cine Institute” – Haiti’s only film school, located in the Southern city of Jacmel.
The short films feature some of the biggest challenges facing Haiti’s children: losing parents to the earthquake; the plight of a girl working as a restavek, a domestic servant; and the challenges, especially economic, confronting families when they send their children to school.

NEWS / PROJECTS / RADIO: UNICEF-supported radio training encourages Haiti’s youth to tell their own story

By Stephanie Power
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, 18 November 2011—Young people in Haiti are speaking up about issues that are important in their lives and their stories are being broadcast on Haitian radio, with the help of training and support from UNICEF and its Haitian partner Panos Caribbean.
"Children should have the right to speak in public," said Jean-Pierre Layben, 14, a radio trainee from Port-au-Prince whose story focuses on life-saving health care. "Sometimes children have something important to say, and adults don't let them. I don't think that's right - children have the right to speak."

NEWS / RADIO: Radio provides a vital link to families amidst the children's emergency in Haiti

by Guy Hubbard

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, 2 February 2010 – A cacophony of songs and voices drifts from the tented camp as thousands of handheld radios transmit entertainment and, more important, information.

A UNICEF public service announcement on nutrition blares out of several radios tuned into Port-au-Prince's Radio One. The station is just one of more than 20 radio outlets in the Haitian capital that are working with Internews, a UNICEF partner and international media development organization providing news reports to hundreds of thousands of people affected by the 12 January earthquake.
