Been very busy over the last two weeks with back-to-back workshops in Bishkek and Karakol, both in Kyrgyzstan.

First was the workshop in the capital on "Violence against children",
now we're about to finish the workshop on "water & sanitation" in Karakol in the east of the country.

Yntymak Radio Aims to Reconcile Uzbek and Kyrgyz Communities after Violence in Southern Kyrgyzstan | Internews

Violence that broke out between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbek communities in southern Kyrgyzstan in June, 2010 left nearly 500 people dead and more than 400,000 displaced from their homes. While the threat of violence has since subsided, mistrust between the two groups remains high. Ethnic Kyrgyz feel they have been unjustly blamed for the conflict and many have responded by embracing ultra-nationalistic sentiments. Meanwhile, many ethnic Uzbeks have lost their livelihoods, property, and sense of security.

Uzbek-language media disappeared from the airwaves in the wake of the riots. Fear and self-censorship continue to silence discussion of the issues that led to the conflict and widen divisions between the two groups.

It has almost been a decade now since Radio Salam went on the air back in 2001. The radio station which is run entirely by young people operates in a very remote part of Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia, near the border with Tajikistan.

OPPORTUNITIES: Internews journalism school invites enrollees to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

Internews Network in Kyrgyzstan is inviting third and fourth year students to participate in an annual journalism school from January 20 to February 7, 2010. Deadline to apply: January 15, 2010.

The curriculum includes: sources of information, genres of stories, video creation, interviewing, convergence, multimedia, media law and other aspects of journalism.

NEWS / CHILDREN'S TV: Magic Journey - Children's TV travels from Kyrgyzstan to Turkey

In spring 2009, a delegation from the Turkish Radio and Television station "AVAZ", a newly-established branch of TRT, visited the National Television and Radio Corporation in Kyrgyzstan to pick up TV programmes which would be aired on TRT AVAZ.

The "Magic Journey" was one of the few programmes selected by TRT. The first 50 episodes (15 min each) from the second season have been subtitled into Turkish and have been broadcast every Friday on TRT Avaz from July 2009. Two months later TRT Avaz called their Kyrgyz counterparts and requested more episodes of the Magic Journey and "Meena". "Meena" was produced by UNICEF offices in East Asia to promote girls rights. The UNICEF country office in Kyrgyzstan dubbed "Meena" into Russian and Kyrgyz in 2008 and aired it several times on National and regional TV stations.

The fact that TRT has requested more episodes of the Magic Journey speaksvolumes about its success on TRT AVAZ. In return, the Kyrgyz National Broadcaster will be able to send its staff to Turkey to learn more about the development and production of children TV programmes on TRT free of charge. At present, the President of the Kyrgyz National Television and Radio Corporation and the Head of the Children's and Youth Programmes are visiting TRT in Turkey to formalize the partnership around the exchange of TV programmes and professional staff training.

NEWS / WORKSHOPS: OneMinutesJr workshop in Kyrgyzstan – Day 1

20 children from four different institutions in Kyrgyzstan participate in a OneMinutesJr workshop in the capital Bishkek this week. The youngsters – aged 10 to 17 years old – will share their stories and experiences from the respective children's home or residential school and produce their own 60-second films before the end of the week.

UNICEF and the NGO Everychild have worked together over the last few weeks to make this workshop happen – and today at 9 AM all invited children are in the conference room in Bishkek when the trainers David and Kristina from Amsterdam and Chris from Germany arrive.

The children's "mission" is clear: Express yourselves! Tell us what is good about the institutions you live and, but also what is not so good about them. The workshop this week will feed into a larger conference coming up in mid-May, also in Bishkek. "Building ad Reforming Child Care Systems in Central Asia, Azerbaijan and Turkey" will be on the agenda in about two weeks from today. And child participation will be one of the defining moments of the conference.

Metamorphoses of the most popular children's cartoon in Kyrgyzstan

How can one make the most popular cartoon in a country even better?

Close your eyes. Imagine you are running with your best friend in a field, with a beautiful kite flying high in the sky above you. You are breathless with joy. But wait! You are really in a vaccination room getting an important immunization. And a few moments ago you were so very scared. So it is with little Akylay and Aktan. With the advice of his best friend, Akylay, little Aktan imagines a happy thought and it worked perfectly: no fear at all, and in fact the vaccination was over before he knew it.

Who are Aktan and Akylay? Almost any child in Kyrgyzstan can tell you. They are the two main characters of ‘Keremet Koch’ (‘Magic Journey’), the animated programme produced by the National TV and Radio Corporation. Since the end of 2006, every day during prime time television, Aktan and Akylay have been gathering Kyrgyz children in front of the TV screen for five minutes of entertainment and education. These five minutes take them on an adventure in a fairy tale world that supports early childhood development and gives children and their parents helpful advice.
