OPPORTUNITIES: Student essay contest open (CAUCASUS)

Students who are citizens of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Russia and Turkey, studying in their home countries or abroad can participate in this contest.

Caucasus International (CI), the international academic journal,  has launched a new essay competition for undergraduate students. Applicants should submit essays that address the question: “How can the South Caucasus achieve regional integration and security?” 

The essays should be about 1,200 to 1,500 words, and should be original, unpublished work that demonstrates clear thinking and good writing skills. Entries must be written in English. Only one essay per participant is permitted.

The winning essay will be publish in the next issue of the journal. The winner will also receive a cash prize of US$400, and two honorable mentions will receive a one-year subscription to Caucasus International.

The deadline is August 10.

OPPORTUNITIES: UNESCO essay contest open

Children and young adults up to 25 years of age can participate in this worldwide essay contest.

The 2012 Goi Peace Foundation - UNESCO International Essay Contest for Young People are inviting youth to respond to this question: What kind of future do you wish to create for yourself and the world?

Essays must be 800 words or less, typed or printed in English, French, Spanish or German or 1600 characters or less in Japanese.

The first-place winner will receive a certificate and prize of 100,000 Yen (approx. US$1,000) and will be invited to the award ceremony in Tokyo, Japan, scheduled for November 2012.

All prize winners will be announced in November 2012 on the Goi Peace Foundation website and the UNESCO website.

OPPORTUNITIES: World Youth Movement for Democracy Essay Contest

The World Youth Movement for Democracy, a youth network of the World Movement for Democracy, is pleased to announce the launch of its Global Essay Contest. Fifteen semi-finalists (3 in each region: Asia, Central/Eastern Europe & Eurasia, Middle East & North Africa, Latin America & Caribbean, and Sub-Saharan Africa) will be announced on Human Rights Day, December 10, and will have their essays published on the WYMD Web site. Two global winners will be invited to participate in the upcoming Community of Democracies Ministerial Meeting in Vilnius, Lithuania, in July 2011.

Like A Drop of Water’s writing contest offers young people, ages eight through seventeen, world wide the opportunity to share their ideas on how they and their countries can reduce global warming and pollution.

Beginning in June 2010, for at least the next five years, four or more monthly winners will receive awards of one hundred dollars. Like drops of water that make up the oceans, millions of people of all ages, can lead the way to bringing about the positive change we need to create a sustainable planet.

Here are the Official Rules

• The contest is open to all young people in the world between the ages of eight and seventeen.
• All essays and entry information must be in English.
• All entries become the property of Like A Drop of Water, Inc.
• Essays are to be 200 words or less.
• Winners will be notified by email and will be required to submit the following information.
• Full name of entrant and age.Name of sponsoring adult.
• Complete mailing address.
• With the sponsoring adult's permission the winner's essay and name will be posted on the website.
• Teachers and their classes may submit a collaborative entry.

No personal information received will be given away, sold or in any way transferred to another company or individual without the express written consent of the sponsoring adult.

• UNICEF is seeking quotes and essays from adolescents (10-19 years old)
• Quotes can be up to 50 words; essays up to 800 words
• Deadline is June 10 to be considered for the State of the World’s Children report

• Deadline is July 30 to be considered for a special SOWC adolescent companion report

The State of the World’s Children (SOWC) has been UNICEF’s flagship publication for 30 years, and every year it closely examines a key issue affecting children. The report is translated into several languages and read by thousands of people in governments, the United Nations, media and the general public. This year the report will focus on adolescents – like you!

OPPORTUNITIES: Youth contest seeks essays on private enterprise, democracy (GLOBAL)

Young writers, aged 18 to 30, from across the world are invited to submit essays on how to create opportunities for youth to strengthen democracy and the private sector in their own countries. Deadline to apply: June 18.

The competition is seeking essays in three categories: 1) Democracy that delivers, 2) enterpreneurship and society and 3) women and participation.

Essays should be between 2,000 and 3,000 words. In each category, first, second, and third place authors will receive a US$1,000 honorarium, and will have their essays published by the competition organizer, the Center for International Private Enterprise.
