7th Jana International Film Festival For Children & Youth

The Arab Resource Center for Popular Arts (ARCPA/AL-JANA) is launching the “7^th International Film Festival for Children & Youth” to be held during October 2013 under the title “A Door to Multiculturalism”. 

Its main aim is to bridge gaps between communities and promote international linkages across cultures. Films to be displayed should be produced by or for children and youth. Productions made by children and youth under the age of 20 years are strongly encouraged. Moreover, all nationalities are encouraged to apply by sending their film.

The Jana International Film Festival for Children & Youth is to be held in October 2011. The main aim of this festival is fostering self-reflection & awareness, learning about the other, critical analyses of social norms & messages related to countering prejudice & intolerance & accepting diversity, introducing new information or analysis that is connected to existing knowledge structures, providing “safe environments’ & permission to experiment with new ways of thinking & reframing conflictual issues in integrative ways.

The central theme of the festival will be "Diversity enriches".

The Festival will display films on and by youth & children under 19 years of age. Preference will be given to films by youth & children themselves, or with their active participation.

This year the festival will be a mobile festival touring different Lebanese marginalized areas.

NEWS: Young People speak out on education for human rights

A new 12-minute film, “Education for Human Rights… Young People talking”, aims to raise awareness of key human rights issues in schools around the world.

Produced by UNESCO and realized by pupils of UNESCO Associated Schools in 10 countries, it shows adolescents of secondary-school age freely expressing their opinions about gender, diversity, violence, exclusion and other questions.

Viewers are invited to appreciate how young people understand and experience concepts and ideals of human rights in countries as different as Albania, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Canada, Dominican Republic, France, Indonesia, Lebanon and Uganda.

The film can be used as a teaching tool for secondary schools to introduce core topics of human rights education and initiate classroom discussions.

OPPORTUNITIES: Red Cross sponsors competition for young journalists

Young reporters interested in covering armed conflict and humanitarian action are invited to enter a competition sponsored by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The deadline is October 1.

The four selected candidates will have the opportunity to attend a one-week ICRC delegation in Georgia, Lebanon, Liberia or the Philippines. The mission will take place January or February 2011, and the candidates will present their resulting news reports in Geneva, Switzerland on May 8.

Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 25 and have demonstrated volunteer work in a humanitarian field. Candidates will be evaluated through a communications project, which can be submitted in English or French.

University students launch independent media outlet

BEIRUT: Around 100 students from eight universities in Lebanon are coming together to create an independent youth media outlet just seven days before the parliamentary elections.

The outlet, Sawt Ashabab (Youth Voice), hopes to represent young Lebanese in the media, and will be distributed as a special section inside two dailies, An-Nahar and Al-Akhbar.
