Applications are now open for the Idea Camp 2015.

50 people will be chosen to work on their ideas at the Idea Camp, co-hosted by the ECF Networked Programme hub Subtopia from 22 to 25 September 2015 in Botkyrka, Sweden.

The theme for this year's edition of the Idea Camp is Build the City.

Build the City is about people creating sustainable cities through social cooperation and active participation with culture at its heart. It is about applying the principles and ethics of the commons to the transformation of the city, its communities and its economy.
More than urban environments, 'The City' can also refer to a neighbourhood or community where people are working together through cultural activities to shape their environments, improve their common life and develop new social and economic relationships.

To apply for the ECF Idea Camp 2015, visit our dedicated Lab. Please note ECF will only publish all related content of the Open Call and the Idea Camp in this Lab!

After the event, participants can submit proposals for the research and development of concrete projects (R&D Grants).

To find out more about last year's Idea Camp and Idea Makers browse through the archive material in the ECF Library, accessible from the Idea Camp 2014 page.

RESEARCH: Swedish study: Young generation prefer ‘old style’ media

A recent study has revealed that the youth of today prefer to spend their time with their nose in a newspaper or listening to the radio, even though internet technology continues to improve. The study from Gothenburg university, shows that in the 9-14 year age group, 75 percent of kids surveyed preferred to give their time to TV, radio, recorded music and reading normal books – instead of the internet.

While social networking sites such as Facebook continue to soar in popularity worldwide, the study shows a trend of younger people to keep a distance from the net. In the 15-24 age group, the percentage of people who did not list the internet as a media preference stood at 60. By the age of 30, however, non-fiction and educational book reading was diminishing, as was the usage of TV and radio. The younger generation meanwhile are mostly attracted to the net for music, videos and social networking, the study showed.

The study also showed that the 9-24 year age group was not big users of tablet computers and e-books, whereas the use of smartphones in this group has multiplied in just a couple of years. Internet has been described as a complement rather than a competitor to older media outlets, and the situation was compared to the introduction of television in the 1950's.

SURVEYS: UK Youth Media Council @ 6th World Summit on Media for Children and Youth

From the UK Youth Media Council

Six young people from across the UK have been selected to represent the UK, at the World Summit on Media for Children and Youth taking place in less than 3 weeks, in Sweden http://www.wskarlstad2010.se/.

The Summit is the largest global event with over 1500 media experts and young people present to debate and produce recommendations to the media on a global scale by taking into consideration issues such as representation, education, economics, law, ethics and responsibilities.

The young people from the UK will make up the UK Youth Media Council and will be working alongside young people from other countries across the world to produce new recommendations for improving the media for children and young people.

The issues that we will talking about include the lack of a youth voice and negative portrayal of young people in the media. Also safeguarding children and youth from the internet (eg cyberbullying), lack of media literacy at primary schools and the imbalance between commercial and social responsibility interests.

We have come up with a few recommendations, one is for an International Children and Youth Media Day. We urgently need young children and young people to fill in our survey (2 minutes) to gather the views and opinions of how young people think about the media in our country.

NEWS: BUFF Financing Forum Focuses On Cross Media (SWEDEN)

Cross media is the new buzz word at the 4th BUFF Financing Forum (BUFF:FF) in Malmö, Sweden (March 17-19), attended by around 140 participants from Northern Europe, specialising in children and youth projects.

Projects developed for new media had been discussed at the previous BUFF:FF, but according to event organizer Annette Brejner, this is the first time that the Forum - the only co-production and co-financing platform for children and youth projects in Scandinavia - is dedicating an entire day on the subject. This new development is directly linked to a financial support for the next three years worth SEK 900,000 (around €92,000) that BUFF:FF has received from the EU and the City of Malmö for its project Malmö Media Evolution/BUFF:FF Focus on Cross Media.

NEWS / STUDIES: Young Swedes And Norwegians Boost TV Viewing Times (SCANDINAVIA)

The average daily time that Swedes and Norwegians spent watching TV last year reached a record 116 and 184 minutes respectively, up by 6 minutes for Sweden and 10 minutes for Norway compared to 2008. Youngsters aged 15-24 are the most avid TV viewers.

TV Viewing Times Increase

In Sweden, youngsters between 15-24 years old watched television 100 minutes a day, 12% more than in 2008 according to a 2009 report published by audience research agency MMS. The older age group 40-59 also spent more time in front of their TV (up 8.5% to 188 minutes a day in 2009), unlike the other age groups 3-14 and 25-39 that slightly reduced their daily viewing time. A research from the Norwegian broadcasting corporation NRK shows similarities within the Norwegian population, in particular the 20-29 years old who watched half an hour more television in 2009 than in 2008.
