EVENTS / CONFERENCES: Cinekid for Professionals Conference

NEW: Cinekid for Professionals Conference!

The first Cinekid for Professionals Conference will be held on 27 and 28 October 2010. Each year, Cinekid strives to organise innovative events in Amsterdam in the area of Children and the Media. The aim is to offer professionals an opportunity to keep in touch with the latest developments in the field, and to give them a chance to expand their professional network. Speakers at this year’s event will include David Freeman, producer and also game and scriptwriter (Pixar, Disney and Aardman Animations), James Alliban, augmented reality specialist (Skive) and Kevin Haug, visual effects specialist (The Kite Runner, Quantum of Solace).

Child and Media is ‘booming business’. An area characterised by innovation. Those who fail to keep up with changes in the cross-media world for children fall by the wayside as professional, and child and family are continually bombarded by new media. From art films for children to the latest advertising platforms, from Harry Potter to Iep!: 3D, visual effects, traditional film and the newest animation techniques. These are all mixed together, while wherever you look augmented reality productions smooth an extra layer on top of everyday reality. This onslaught offers new possibilities, but it also demands great flexibility in the trusted methods usually applied to storylines, scenario’s, production and distribution. The Cinekid for Professionals Conference will provide an annual injection designed to encourage quality, focussing on the specific issues involved in children’s media.

Cinekid for Professionals Conference
On October 27 the emphasis will lie on recent developments within Child and Media, scriptwriting for children, augmented reality and animation. On the second day there will be more specialised sessions with time for discussion. During Lost Without the Script, Karen Wallace, Julian Friedmann, David Freeman, Anne Zeegers, Ike Bertels and Waldemar Torenstra will talk about the challenges in scenario writing, and illustrate methods to improve the quality of scenario’s. Augmented Reality: Enhancing the Tale will focus on augmented reality beyond the hype. James Alliban and Fred Elmann will stimulate thinking about the way in which new media formats release an enormous wave of creativity.

AWARDS / CHILDREN'S TV: 2009 Cinekid Awards

The 2009 Cinekid Awards 2009 have just been announced. In an auditorium filled to the brim, Isolde Hallensleben announced the winners of the Cinekid Lion Awards (film), the Cinekid Kinderkast Awards (television) and the Cinekid New Media Awards.

Film
The Z@PP Cinekid Lion Audience Award (EUR 15.000) went to Christian Ditter's film The Crocodiles (Germany). The same film also secured the MovieSquad Cinekid Award (EUR 2.000), the prize awarded by the children's jury of the Dutch Institute for Film Education. This year's Cinekid Lion Jury Award (EUR 15.000) was won by the Korean film A Brand New Life from Ounie Lecomte (France, South Korea). The jury called the film, about growing up in an orphanage and waiting for adoption, a notable debut of exceptional quality for both adults and children. A Special Mention was awarded to Skellig from Annabel Jankel (VS, England), and to the actor Ali Shadman for his extraordinary performance in A Time to Love from Ebrahim Forouzesh (Iran). In the film Shadman plays a spastic boy who is hidden from the outside world by his family. During a discussion that followed one of the film's screenings, there was considerable commotion when it turned out that the actor is in real life absolutely healthy and normal.

New Media
Amongst the Cinekid New Media Awards, the audience cast the most votes for SpangaS (a cross-medial production) from the NCRV and Shop Around, which received two more votes than Raymann Raving Rabbids TV Party (Wii) from Ubisoft. This last production was also popular with the jury, but the Cinekid New Media Jury Award (EUR 7.500) was awarded to Children for Children Karaoke (website) from the VARA and Lost Boys.

Television
There were surprises when it came to the Cinekid Kinderkast awards. The Audience Award for Non-Fiction went to the Kids & Docs documentary Laura & Anne 4 ever from Susan Koenen (RKK/KRO). In the category Fiction, the children's Audience Award went to Puppy Patrol from Annemarie Mooren (Nickelodeon). The Jury Award for Fiction went to Tales from Zoutvloed from Iván López Núnez, Ineke Houtman and Ties Schenk (VPRO), and in Non-Fiction to Letters from Nicaragua from Stef Biemans (VPRO). During the award ceremony the programme's maker received the good news in Nicaragua via Skype.

Bypassing the official nominations, the Kinderkast jury awarded the Golden Cinekid Kinderkast Award (EUR 7.500) to the programme Applecore, episode 'What to do if you fall through the ice' from Uif Putters, Leo de Groot and Kees Prins (NPS). In awarding the prize, the jury noted that the deciding factor was not so much creative renewal, but rather the value of a programme that for so many years, happily, has been responsible for such a high level of quality.

EVENTS: Cinekid launches First Annual Junior Cross Media Market

New initiative: Cinekid launches First Annual Junior Cross Media Market

Always on top of the latest trends, Cinekid once again takes the lead and launches into cooperation with IJsfontein for a global cross-media market on the 21st of October. The Junior Cross Media Market will bring together producers of promising multi-platform projects, commissioning editors and financers to stimulate international co-productions.

The event kicks off with key cross media industry experts, together with producers and financiers to discuss the possibilities and the future of the emerging cross or trans media world for children. These discussions will be followed by one-on-one meetings between producers of cross-media content with co-producers and financiers.

The Junior Cross Media Market is part of Cinekid's 2009 cross media focus and also includes a seminar and an expert meeting. Topics of discussion will be: What is happening right now in cross-media for kids and where is the medium going tomorrow? Which creative resources are needed to create market relevant kid's cross-media properties? What new financial structures will support pan-European cross-media productions? How can existing corporate broadcasting structures be re-tooled to support cross-media cooperation in terms of product development and distribution?

Cinekid is proud to partner with the Dutch company Ijsfontein for the Junior Cross Media Market: IJsfontein is a specialist in interactive communication and media productions for kids and youth. The Amsterdam based company is active in the international media world since her debut-game ‘Master Of The Elements' won a BAFTA Award in 1997. IJsfontein helps broadcasting companies, museums, (consumer) brands and non-governmental organisations in reaching young audiences effectively. Read more about IJsfontein's marketing and communication concepts, games, web-tools and interactive exhibits at IJsfontein.com.

From 14-23 October, the 23rd edition of Cinekid Film Festival will take place in Amsterdam. Cinekid is a film, television and new media festival for children and is regarded as the largest media festival of its kind in the world. According to Variety magazine: "Cinekid is increasingly becoming an industry watering hole where some of the major issues in the world of children's media are fleshed out." Kidscreen magazine comments: "Cinekid amps up content for industry pro's."

The complete Cinekid programme can be found from September 15 at www.cinekid.nl. This year's festival will be held at the Westergasfabriek and The Movies in Amsterdam.
