RESEARCH: Nielsen Unveils Global Mobile Youth Study

Hong Kong – From texting to video to social networking, mobile phones are taking an ever-expanding role in our daily lives. Young people around the world are more immersed in mobile technology than any previous generation. Usage patterns vary greatly among youth throughout the world, demonstrating how culture, economy and age can all play an integral part in mobile behavior. How do young people use their mobile phones and how might marketers use that knowledge to reach them?

The Nielsen Company analyzes and tracks mobile usage in North America, Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.

OPPORTUNITIES: Colombia workshop for young journalists will discuss newsroom innovation

Young print journalists are invited to participate in a workshop on innovating the newsroom. Deadline: August 17.

The workshop, which will be held September 6 to 11 in Bogotá, aims to train young journalists working in print media to leave behind old, and perhaps obsolete, concepts in newspaper writing.

The course will be led by Spanish journalist Miguel Ángel Bastenier, who recently launched the book "Cómo se escribe un periódico" ("How to write a newspaper").

AWARDS: Prize to focus on children, adolescents in the Dominican Republic

Journalists in the Dominican Republic who work in print, digital, and broadcast media are invited to submit works on situations that affect children and adolescents in the country to a national competition. Deadline: August 13.

The competition, organized by Plan República Dominicana, UNICEF and Visión Mundial, seeks to promote the coverage of children and to create awareness of childhood issues in the media and society.

Works must have been published between August 16, 2009 and August 10, 2010.

Cine Las Americas invites filmmakers, producers and distributors to participate in The Cine Las Americas International Film Festival, now in its thirteenth consecutive year. The festival showcases contemporary films from North, Central, South America, the Caribbean and the Iberian Peninsula, as well as works made by or about Latinos and/or indigenous groups of the Americas.

The festival grants the following awards:

* Jury Awards in the categories: First or Second Dramatic Feature; Documentary Feature; Dramatic Short; and Documentary Short.
* Audience Awards in the categories: Best Documentary Feature and Best Dramatic Feature.
* Youth Jury Award for best “Emergencia” film.
* Texas Archive of the Moving Image (TAMI) Award for best Made in Texas film.

OPPORTUNITIES: Spanish-speaking young journalists invited to submit works on freedom

Spanish-speaking journalists younger than 25-years-old in Latin America and throughout the world have until September 30 to enter a competition that aims to express the concept of freedom and its obstacles.

The contest, organized by Grupo Salinas in Mexico, is accepting works in musical theatre, photography, fine arts, videos and essays. The competition marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The first place winner will be awarded MXN$50,000 (about US$3,780); the second place winner will receive MXN$30,000 (about US$2,268), and the third, MXN$15,000 (about US$1,130). Winners will be announced on November 5.
