Web-ethics on the agenda

SMS, Facebook, chat, World of Warcraft. Today, children and young people live a major part of their lives online in an everyday life where the borders between online and offline are blurred and online communications constitutes a central nerve. Integrating digital technology in teaching in primary school is about much more than just offering computers and internet to the students – it is every bit as relevant to take the digital media reality of children today as a starting point for developing the teaching methods. Digital media and technologies such as the mobile, wireless internet and social networking are not in opposition to teaching – on the contrary they hold the potential to improving and developing the very content of education.

The term web-ethics is gaining ground in school and this is a development which The Danish Media Council for Children and Young People, The National IT and Telecom Agency and UNI-C cooperate on supporting through a web-ethics section on the teachers portal www.emu.dk.

NEWS: Copenhagen Children’s Climate Forum declares: the time to fight climate change is now

Youth delegates hold up a copy of their finalized Declaration today in Copenhagen, during the closing of the Children's Climate Forum.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, 4 December 2009 - After a week of intensive work and debate, about 160 young people from all over the globe finalized a Declaration today in Copenhagen, committing to personal changes in their own lives and demanding that governments worldwide take actions to protect our planet from the impacts of climate change.

The document was presented to the President of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15), Connie Hedegaard, during the closing ceremony of the Children's Climate Forum, at Copenhagen's City Hall. Ms. Hedegaard is now expected to take the Declaration to world leaders at the COP15, starting next Monday, 7 December.

Children to jump start Copenhagen conference

Ahead of the UN conference on climate change in December, children and teenagers from 42 countries meet in the Danish capital to agree on recommendations for the world leaders.

When the world’s leaders meet in Copenhagen this December, they will be met by fresh recommendations from a conference comprising participants aged 14 to 17 from 42 countries. Each country will send a five-person delegation.

“To children and youth everything is at stake in the international negotiations on climate change. As they will need to live with climate change and the consequences of decisions taken by adults today, they have a right to make themselves heard in the debate,” says Steen M. Andersen, Secretary General of UNICEF Denmark.

The Children’s Climate Forum Copenhagen 2009 will take place from November 28th till December 4th.
