ARTICLES: 'Children's Rights Not Getting Enough Attention in Media' (INDIA)

Journalists have the power to change the way children’s rights are perceived and enforced in the country and so have a duty to educate themselves on the various aspects of child protection issues before they publish news in the media, said Rita Panicker, founder-director of Butterflies, a Delhi-based NGO that works for the empowerment of children here on Tuesday.

She was presenting a session at a workshop on child rights for media persons organised by Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

“Media persons should not get carried away by whims or emotions and not fall into the trap of demonising juveniles,” said Panicker, speaking on ‘What media can do to promote child rights’.
