When Geena Davis was a child growing up in Massachusetts, she and her best friend would play cowboys, firing their pretend pistols and riding off into imaginary sunsets.
The two never questioned their male-centric role-play. There weren't any cowgirls or leading women on their favourite TV shows, so who else would be riding those ranges? Five decades on and not much has changed.
"The ratio of male to female characters in film hasn't changed since 1946," Davis said Tuesday morning, shortly after her speech at the Canadian Women's Foundationannual fundraising breakfast in Calgary. The figure has held steady at three-to-one for more than a half-century. "So we are all trained to see this imbalance."
