ARTICLES: Fast-food firms on Facebook and social media to exploit advertising standards loopholes

FAST-food companies are jumping on to Facebook and social media to aim at children and exploit loopholes in Australia's advertising standards, obesity experts claim.

An audit of marketing campaigns by major companies Coca-Cola, Cadbury and McDonalds found they were regularly using new media aimed at children and adolescents in ways which would not be allowed through traditional advertising.

Melbourne researchers found the junk-food giants were using branded online games, mobile apps and Facebook discount groups to attract young people to their products, despite marketing guidelines preventing the targeting of young people.
