Filipino youth air views on sexual health in video contest

Safe sex. Premarital sex. HIV/AIDS. These are only some of the big sexual health questions young people in the Philippine are facing. Through Mulat Pinoy, young Filipinos are able to share their concerns and reach out to the rest of the population.

Mulat Pinoy is a project of the Probe Media Foundation, Inc., supported by the Philippine Center for Population and Development. Initiated in 2009, the project aims to inform young Filipinos about population and development using social media. From Facebook to Twitter, Mulat Pinoy seeks to give young people a voice in matters that affect them, as well as disseminate information from the experts. In the Philippines, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) make up a big chunk of the population and development discussion.

To involve young people in the SRHR debates, Mulat Pinoy organized video contests that encourage them to share the thoughts and questions that concern them the most. In 2011, “We Are Right Here, We Are RH” garnered over 30 video entries, mostly dealing with the then-controversial Reproductive Health Bill (signed into law on December 21, 2012) but also with other concerns, like teenage pregnancy and virginity. In July 2012, Mulat Pinoy launched “Sexual Health: Shout or Shush,” inviting the Filipino young to once again share their thoughts on sexual health.

The “Sexual Health: Shout or Shush” video contest closed its timeframe for submissions on October 31, 2012, and received a total of 21 entries. A panel of judges evaluated the entries, and those with the ten highest scores were announced as finalists.

The winners will be selected by public voting via Facebook Likes and YouTube thumbs ups.
