NEWS / CHILDREN'S TV: Sesame Street returns to Chinese TV

Sesame Street is relaunching in China with new 11-minute Mandarin-language program to be hosted by Big Bird.

The daily Sesame Street's Big Bird Looks at the World will make its debut on the Ha Ha Children's Channel, owned by Shanghai Media Group, on Dec. 22.

The film Big Bird in China first introduced Chinese children to the friendly yellow bird in 1983. Then from 1998 to 2001, a Chinese version of the educational children's show screened on Shanghai television.

Chinese children are able to see Western programs such as SpongeBob SquarePants, but government regulations restrict the amount of foreign programming seen on Chinese TV.
