Children are switching off the television in favour of books and cartoon strips, a major poll of the young's reading habits has found.

The research, which coincides with World Book Day, shows that 45 per cent of 11-year-olds would now prefer to read rather than sit in front of the television, compared with 38 per cent of children four years ago.

A total of 4,500 nine and 11-year-olds in 61 UK schools took part in the survey by the National Foundation for Educational Research, which revealed that although the number of children enjoying reading has dropped in the past decade, the dramatic decline between 1998 and 2003 has at least been halted.
