UNICEF and Morgan Stanley Begin Selection Process for Junior 8 Summit
NEW YORK/LONDON 9 February 2007 - UNICEF and the Morgan Stanley International Foundation announced today the beginning of the selection process for 13 to 17 year-old young people to attend the Junior 8 2007 Summit ("J8 Summit") in Wismar, Germany which will be held in conjunction with the meeting of world leaders at the G8 Summit Germany 2007 this June.German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who met with eight young people from the J8 during the G8 Summit in St Petersburg last year, has pledged to host a meeting with J8 delegates and G8 leaders in Germany this June.

UNICEF and the Morgan Stanley International Foundation first teamed up to facilitate youth participation at the G8 in 2006.
Justin Simpson, Chairman of the Morgan Stanley International Foundation, said: "As we have seen in previous years, young people the world over feel passionately about the environmental, social and economic issues facing our world today. We are delighted that the G8 leaders have seen the value of the J8 programme in inspiring young people to engage themselves in these issues and look forward to hearing the outputs of another successful Summit in June."
"We are pleased to be working with Morgan Stanley International Foundation to include the opinions and perspectives of young people at the G8 summit," said UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman, who attended last year's J8 near St. Petersburg. "This year the youth participants at the J8 will discuss economic development in Africa; prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS; climate change and energy efficiency; the global economy, including intellectual property rights and corporate social responsibility."
The selection process calls on groups of young people from G8 countries to submit their entries to a national panel by March 2007. Morgan Stanley and UNICEF are offering young people and teachers up-to-date online teaching material in all six core G8 languages. The winning team will be judged on their recommendations for the G8 leaders. In addition to the 64 young people representing the G8 countries, ten children from developing countries will also be chosen to participate.
