Online communities: A life online
07/02/07 Social networking web sites such as MySpace and Bebo have grown to play a major role in young people's lives. Caspar van Vark asks whether the youth sector should view them as an opportunity or a threat.
Venture into the home of a teenager today and the chances are they won't be watching TV or reading magazines, but sat in front of a computer, chatting online to friends or sharing videos. In fact, they'll have almost an entire social life online. This phenomenon of "social networking" has grown enormously over the past few years to the point where an estimated seven out of 10 young people are now using these web sites (see box out). |
