NEWS / EVENTS: 5th World Summit on Media for Children

The 5th World Summit on Media for Children, sponsored and lead by the World Summit on Media for Children Foundation, located in Australia, under the orientation of the producer Patricia Edgar, is to take place in the final week of March 2007, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The event is expected to bring together around one thousand delegates plus some 300 teenagers. Unlike past summits, the youngsters will be taking official part in the main plenary sessions, which will be on the general theme Media as a tool for global peace and democracy. Another innovation is that radio, being the most popular mass communications medium, will play a prominent role in the discussions.

The information on the 5th World Summit were announced last Monday, 22 August, by Firdoze Bulbulia, the chairperson for 5th World Summit, who took part in a preparatory meeting at MULTIRIO's offices in Rio de Janeiro. Accompanied by Faith Isiakpere, of the organizing committee, Firdoze was welcomed by Regina de Assis, president of MULTIRIO, who coordinated the 4th World Summit on Media for Children and Adolescents, held in Rio, in April 2004.

Firdoze explained that the African summit will also mark the launch of ?I Am An African? , a TV series of 52 X 24-minute episodes, which is to be co-produced internationally, to show how teenagers from the four corners of the world see African identity.

In two sessions : one in the morning and another in the afternoon, Firdoze and Faith presented the general outlines of the next summit, showed videos on the event and exchanged ideas with the audience of young people, teachers, researchers, producers, publicity agents and professionals of the media industry. "We are here to discuss with you how we can construct together an agenda for the 5th World Summit. If Latin America and Asia and Africa unite, and we represent a significant portion of the planet, we can set an agenda appropriate to our interests, we can guide the debate. We have a great responsibility: to continue, in Africa, the work proposed at the 4th World Summit", stressed Firdoze.
