Job Title: Project Director, Child Right Connect (India, Brazil and Kenya)
Location: Based in London, UK

Duration: 3 months to start with (during inception phase until end October 2013) with prospective extension (implementation phase till 2018)

Background

Internews Europe is an international media development organization that improves access to information and freedom of expression worldwide. We do this by strengthening local media and information systems so that all citizens can make their voices heard, understand critical issues and claim equal rights.

Internews Europe is launching an exciting 5-year project to increase the quality of media and communication on critical child rights issues in India, Kenya, Brazil. This project will work to support traditional media outlets (TV, radio, newspapers) and use new media systems (Internet – website content/social media; cell phones/SMS) to better communicate information on child rights issues, expand the public and policy debate, and amplify child and advocacy voices on child rights.

General function

The Project Director is responsible for the development, management, (programmatic and financial) and coordination of the project. The position is based in London, UK and will involve in-countries field travels.
  • Overall project management: provide leadership and direction and quality control for the implementation of all project activities, in India, Brazil and China, ensuring that the project’s goals are achieved while improving effectiveness and maximizing impact;
  • Team management: Direct the efforts of an international team in three countries, in order to assure that high standards of professional training and related activities are delivered according to project commitments;
  • Manage relations with local project partners and beneficiaries: negotiate and manage MoUs, supervise and monitor the implementation of activities, ensure smooth communication with all parties involved;
  • Financial oversight: ensure that financial and administrative processes are controlled and compliant with organizational and donor requirements;
  • Local partners capacity building: provide organizational development support to local partners and beneficiaries as appropriate; mentoring of local partners staffs through strong management, specialized trainings, upgraded resource materials and tools, effective feedback and modeling of professionalism;
  • Official correspondence and representation: prepare or oversee the production of all official communications, briefings and reports to donors and partners as required; represent Internews in conferences and round-tables.
Qualifications

Essential
  • Experience managing large international media and development projects
  • Background in journalism / communication
  • Familiar with child right issues
  • Work experience in different continents and high intercultural sensitivity
  • Experience managing teams of up to 20 people and working with partner organisations (media outlets, NGOs…)
  • Good knowledge of project planning, monitoring and evaluation (set goals, monitor progress and evaluate results)
  • Experience creating and managing budgets
  • Fluent spoken and written English
  • Basic knowledge of Portuguese
Desirable (the more, the better)
  • Experience in journalistic work with/by/for children/youth
  • Work experience with children, knowledge of child psychology
  • Experience in projects engaging different stakeholders (like NGOs, media, government)
  • Work experience in India, Brazil, Kenya
  • Experience in designing and conducting trainings (journalism and media literacy)
  • Familiar with global debates on media ethics/professional standards and their implementation
  • Familiar with social media and new digital communication technologies
  • Experience in organising media awards
  • Fluent in Portuguese
  • Knowledge of Hindi, Kiswahili or other relevant local languages
Conditions
  • Full time – UK contract until end October 2013 for the time being, extendable up to 2018
  • Starting date – 1st August 2013
  • Based in Internews Europe head office in London, with regular travel to India, Brazil and Kenya.
