Dear Youth Media Educator,
we are very excited to announce that we are now accepting student applications for our 8th annual SuperFly Filmmaking Experience.
SuperFly will take place May 30th through June 1st on a Seattle-area reservation, and will culminate with a screening at the Seattle International Film Festival on Saturday, June 1st at the Harvard Exit theater.
A partnership between Longhouse Media and the Seattle International Film Festival, the SuperFly Filmmaking Experience is the cornerstone program of Longhouse Media's youth calendar.
Each year 50 young artists (70% Native) come together on a local reservation or tribal lands for a weekend of filmmaking, technical skills building, leadership training, storytelling and cultural exchange. SuperFly is a 36 hour filmmaking intensive based on an original story written by an indigenous artist. In the allotted time, our youth (with the guidance of 20 professional mentors), produce five short films, and watch their work come to life at SIFF by the weekend's end.
SuperFly transcends film; it is literally a life-changing event for our youth and mentors. The true beauty of SuperFly is best described in the local tradition of the potlatch. It is a community effort: our students
participate on scholarships, giving this unique opportunity to youth that otherwise could not afford such a program; traditional foods, lodging and transportation are granted by tribal communities and partners; and mentors and volunteers graciously donate their time. This generosity not only ensures that SuperFly can happen, it also lays the foundational spirit for a weekend of sharing, collaboration and personal growth.
We believe that SuperFly is a one of a kind program that you will not find anywhere else in the world.
