AWARDS: UNICEF media award to focus on child rights (MIDDLE EAST)

MUSCAT: As the deadline approaches, UNICEF’s Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is currently receiving submissions for its Regional Award for Media on Child Rights, an award for excellence in reporting on the situation and issues of children in the region. This year, the focus is on violence against children.

“Media professionals in the Middle East and North Africa region have shown strong interest in children and youth issues in the past years and particularly, in the last few months.

Ninety per cent of children in the region are exposed to physical or psychological violence as a means of discipline; 10 per cent are engaged in child labour and 18 per cent are married before the age of 18 years,” says Charbel Raji, Unicef’s regional chief of Media and Communication for MENA.

UNICEF, therefore, has called for submissions from journalists in the following categories: Television, radio, print, photography, online media and caricature. Only works published or aired between August 20 and July 20 will be considered.
