What would you do if you had an extra 62 days and $1,600 to burn at the end of the year?

This is what the average student would have available if they cut down on their media usage by half — not fully abstaining, mind you. Only half.

A study conducted by Susan Brockus, an assistant professor in Chico State’s journalism department, showed on average we spend more than eight hours a day interacting with some form of media.

This includes television, computer, iPod, cell phone, radio, print and video game console use. Brockus asked a class of 48 students to record their daily usage of media in a typical five-day period.

The students were asked to abstain completely from their favorite form of media for two of the five days and the average usage was still this high.
