DISCUSSIONS: Getting youth involved in journalism (GLOBAL)

Join the Discussion: Getting youth involved in journalism

21/08/2006

Dear Colleagues,

Children are affected by most of the top stories covered by journalists today ? from HIV/AIDS to environmental disasters. However, many would argue that even when reporters place a priority on covering children?s issues, the perspective of children is missing unless young people have the opportunity to actively practice journalism.

Moreover, when youth gain experience reporting, news organizations are able to recruit skilled local talent.

What opportunities are available in your country for young people interested in journalism? What are the benefits of encouraging young people to pursue journalism at an early age?
How can media groups encourage young people to get involved in the field?
