NEWS: Oulu launches Finland's first regional film foundation (FINLAND)

REGIONAL FILM FOUNDATION OPENS IN OULU

Already hosting the Oulu International Children's Film Festival and Nordisk Panorama-5 Cities Film Festival, Oulu launches Finland's first regional film foundation

The City of Oulu, the Council of Oulu Region and the Oulu Polytechnic have decided to establish Finland's first regional film foundation in Oulu this autumn, based on the Northern Film and Media Centre that has operated for six years as an EU project.

Filming in Oulu dates back to 1920, when Erkki Karu started shooting his Finlandia by the Merikoski rapids. A few years later writer Teuvo Pakkala founded Finn Film, the first film production company in Oulu. The best known film shot in Northern Ostrobothnia before World War II is Nyrki Tapiovaara's national classic, Juha that was partly shot in Kuusamo in 1936. A total of 45 feature length films have been shot in the region.

The purpose of the foundation is to promote, develop, support and maintain film and media industries and culture in Northern Finland. To fulfill its purpose the foundation will support and develop film and television productions and their marketing, sales and distribution in different media and events, and to organise various events in the field.

The new foundation will next year move to the Youth and Culture Centre Nuku, with the Oulu Film Centre (founded in 1973), the Nuku Film School and three international film festivals, including the Oulu International Children's Film Festival, the Oulu Music Video Festival and Nordisk Panorama-5 Cities Film Festival.  At the same time Finnkino's new cinema centre in Oulu will open its doors to the public.
